Q: Left Jeff, Left Jeff,
McCain has picked his running mate. She is a woman. I am confused & conflicted. Does a woman trump half an African-America?
If only Barrack had chosen Hillary...
Liberal Dan
A: Given that she's on a republican ticket, she's a sell out for her gender. The GOP invariably opposes what's best for women. How she can support their platform is beyond me. I couldn't help but notice that she is not pro-choice. How can a woman, claiming to be for freedom, be opposed to a woman having the right to choose what she does with her own body?? She may be female in gender, but has obviously chosen to align herself with sexist bigots like McCain, which negates her minority status.

Big Fast Food
Q: In a town near LA it is now a law that fast food restaurants cannot be built. What are your thoughts?
A: We know after years of studies that tobacco is killing people. Appropriate steps have been taken (such as raising taxes on cigarettes) to try to prevent cigarette companies from having free reign to kill their customers. We're now seeing more and more studies on how deadly trans fats and other fast food ingredients are. What we're seeing is that in poorer areas, with less education people are forced to eat this deadly food because there aren't any affordable alternatives. Big corporations like McDonalds are getting rich off the stomachs of poor people that don't have the money to eat healthy rich people food. Without some kind of intervention, these people would be forced to become obese and would eventually die of some obesity related health problem. Hurrah for someone who had the courage to stand up to these evil corporations and help protect the poor.

Equal Things
Q: I saw someone driving around in a brand new Ferrari the other day. It doesn't seem fair that they should have such nice things, while so many in the world are starving. What do you think?
A: It absolutely isn't fair. We have to keep in mind that his success must be because of some kind of chicanery. Other people work harder, but have less. He's probably one of these big oil types. People like this obviously don't care about the poor or the needy. One of the things the constitution guarantees us is not only equal rights, but also equal things. A tax increase would help even things out, so one person doesn't have more than an another. All we want is some fairness in the world. Is that too much to ask?
Along these same lines, the constitution also guarantees rights to health care, federally run public education etc. I've even heard it proposed that things like the Internet should be provided by the government. The government is expected to provide things like roads. I consider the Internet to fall under this same category. Given that some cannot afford it, those that have more money than they need should fit the bill. Someone needs to take care of the little guy. Who better to do this, than the democrats.

Obama in the Polls
Q: Left Jeff, Left Jeff,
I am disheartened. Obama is only a few points ahead in the polls. And this after all the help our good friends in the press have been giving him. Some days I feel that there are just too many religious bigots still out there. Help!
Liberal Dan
A: This is just another example of how racist this country still is. Sometimes it's difficult living such a bigoted nation. But keep your hopes up. Obama will triumph!

ANWR and Offshore Drilling
Q: Left Jeff! Left Jeff! With gas prices getting so high, is it time to start considering drilling in places like ANWR and off our coasts?
A: We can't drill our way out of this problem. The solution is not to produce more oil, but to conserve what we have and get off our addiction to oil. The fact is there isn't enough oil to make a measurable difference. And any difference it would make would take 15 years before it would help. The only result we'd get from off shore drilling is a black ocean, from the inevitable oil spills. And drilling in ANWR would destroy that pristine area forever. For too long Americans have driven around in their gas guzzling SUV's, without regard to the impact it has on the environment. Their 'life in the fast lane' is finally catching up with them and hitting them where it hurts. I propose that we place a tax on SUV's to deter people from purchasing and driving them. This could be in the form of a carbon tax, given SUV's have such a big carbon footprint. The government should also give more subsidies to research alternative forms of energy such as wind, solar etc. (paid for by taxing the rich) But at the same time they need to be cognizant of the effect these alternative forms have on the environment. We wouldn't want birds to fly into windmills and get killed. In fact, the more I think about it, the solution should be to walk everywhere or stay home. And remember when home to keep your lights off to conserve energy. Those that choose not to take this common sense approach are hurting themselves, the people around them and especially their planet. Additional tax hikes on the rich who think they can use all the energy they want with no thought for tomorrow would be an appropriate step.

Another "Tax Break for the Rich"
From Liberal Dan...
Q: Left Jeff, Left Jeff, my right wingnut god fearing friend tells me that taxing the rich will only make the economy worse and hurt the poor more. She says that the rich will spend less and employ fewer people. What do I tell her?
A: Your friend obviously is a bigot and doesn't care what happens to the poor. The rich getting richer only makes the poor poorer. Taking some of the rich's money and distributing it out to those less fortunate will create wealth for everyone, not just the super rich who cheated their way to the top. After all the rich have plenty to go around, and it's only fair that they share with those less fortunate.

What Do We Do About The Economy
Q: Left Jeff! Left Jeff! What do we do about this terrible economy??
A: This is a problem that all of us are concerned about. Because of Bush's failed economic policy, predatory lending practices and the windfall profits that the evil oil companies are making, our country has fallen into a deep recession, comparable to the great depression. Just look on your local street corner and you'll probably see a long soup line. People are starving because of the greed of people like Bush (who is definitely the worst president ever!). We're victims not only of Bush and his oil cronies, but also of capitalism in general. We must have someone reign in capitalism when it gets out of hand. My suggestion, if you don't want you and your children to starve, is to vote for Obama. He alone can turn the tide of the nations economy. He'll raise taxes on the rich, he'll garnish the profits of big oil companies, so they can't take advantage of us anymore, he'll create more government control of the lending industry to prevent innocent people from being suckered into mortgages they can't afford. And above all, he'll get us out of Iraq! We're spending so much money there that could go towards helping the poor. We must get out of Iraq!
